27-29/09/19: 4th EDITION SUMMER SCHOOL WALTER BENJAMIN
The 4th Summer School Walter Benjamin will take place in Portbou from the 27th September until the 29th September. This year marks 80 years of retreat and the exile for 300,000 people who crossed the mountains of the Pyrenees by Portbou, out of the 500,000 who fled from Republican Spain to exile when the Spanish Civil War ended in 1939.
The 4th Walter Benjamin summer School of Portbou incorporates an agreement with the artists residing at The Creation Factory, La Escocesa, in Barcelona: the artist works as a critical activator of history, whose results will be exhibited in the customs room of the Railway Station of Portbou and, with the Fotolimo Photography Festival, with a debate on Walter Benjamin and photography.
Participants: Cari Oriol, Jean Calens, Carme Alda, Fernando Hernández Sánchez, Anne Roche, Madeleine Claus, Maria Maïlat, Manolo Laguillo and Ignasi Solé Sugranyes.
On Saturday 28th evening will be the opening of exhibition Desired landscapes at the Customs Hall, Portbou International Railway Station (8:00 pm).
On Sunday 29th September will take place the following Commemorative events.
Casa Walter Benjamin, 11 a.m:
-Presentation book Walter Benjamin-Bertolt Brecht. Trobada a Portbou, de Maria Maïlat, translated by Anna-Maria Corredor and illustrated by Guillén. Presentation by Carles Duarte, Vicenç Altaió and Pilar Parcerisas.
-Presentation Library Walter Benjamin, donation by Gian-Luigi Ponzano to Fundació Angelus Novus.
Sala La Congesta, 11:30 a.m.:
-Yael Karavan: performance "Living threads"
Portbou Cemetery, 12 p.m.: Celebration de la Declaration of Cultural Good of Nacional Interest Passages Memorial (2018). Interventions Carles Duarte, poet. Reading of poems by Hannah Arendt, Maria Zambrano and Walter Benjamin, conduted by Cari Oriol.
Place lectures: Centre Cívic Ca l'Herrero, c/ Méndez Núñez, 2. Portbou.
Place Exhibition: Customs Hall at Portbou International Railway Station.

GUIDED TOURS TO THE MEMORIAL PASSAGES TO WALTER BENJAMIN
We offer an itinerary through the main passages of Walter Benjamin in Portbou, including a tour to the Memorial Passages by Dani Karavan.
The Memorial is an homage to all those anonymous fugitives who go into exile in search of freedom. Recently, the Israeli artist has been awarded with the Premi Nacional de Cultura 2016 (Catalan Culture Award) for this art work.
